TURNING PASSION INTO PROFIT

After moving to the United States and being thrust into a culture with an unfamiliar language, Wessam [We-Sam ] understood the value of learning, adapting, and adjusting to a different world at the age of six. Wessam valued communication from a young age after having to learn a second language, and soon enough, verbal communication transformed into visual communication.

Moving to a foreign country allowed her to explore interests she would not have known otherwise. Although from a family of engineers and mathematicians, Wessam discovered her own passion and a new way of doing things. Entrepreneurship helped turn her passion for photography into profit, convincing her family of other legitimate careers.

For Wessam, adjusting does not mean leaving her culture behind, but rather combining two worlds through adaptability to language and empathizing with a variety of people through a wider lens. Photography skills and interests sparked a student journalism career which then paved the way for a future in communications.

Earlier work as a teenager in photo and print journalism led to a position with The Commonwealth Times. Wessam utilizes skills in Adobe to manage VCU’s Formula SAE business team, curates social media for the Figuring It Out podcast, and interns at an event company. She is learning Adobe InDesign and Illustrator to expand knowledge in a variety of software programs.

To expand real-world experience, Wessam coordinated building-wide events as Gladding Residence Center Community Council Vice President.

Aside from her professional path, Wessam holds onto her values in connecting with people through media and experiences. Wessam seeks adventure. She shares experiences on her blog and through photography. Although outside of the family norm to explore a creative career, Wessam has their support in choosing a unique path.
